Joss Whedon Exclusive To Marvel, To Return To TV

So, yesterday when I reported that Marvel had signed Joss Whedon to write and direct Avengers 2, it turns out that wasn't everything.

The contract Whedon has is something of an omnibus deal, exclusively linking the man to Marvel studios until 2015, the proposed release of Avengers 2. Whedon will be working with Kevin Fiege to help organise and direct all future movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Phase 2, and into Phase 3.

On top of that, he will be working with ABC Television to develop the TV series Disney wants desperately to make that relates to the MCU. Considering that ABC and Disney want this series to happen with the passion of a fresh Venetian romance, it pretty much guarantees that we'll have a new Whedon series on TV sometime in the next couple years. A series that FOX will probably try, and utterly fail, to cancel.

The down side to all of this is that Whedon is exclusive to Marvel/Disney until the contract is up. Which means we'll have to wait at least that long for any non Marvel projects, including Serenity. Much Ado About Nothing has already been made, and it's possible since the Dr. Horrible sequel is already in development, he'll be able to finish it before moving back over to Marvel.

A couple years ago in an interview, Whedon said that he had always wanted to be a company man, the guy that works for a company despite the ups and downs, which might explain why he kept going back to FOX like a hamster licking an electric cupcake. So I can only guess that he's right in his glory right now.

Good for him.
