Sometimes, There Are Boxes

Laika is shaping up to be the animation studio to watch. Pixar's time at the top has come and gone (from a quality perspective, not a financial one), and Aardman's output is strong, but appropriately slow. Laika too takes their time with their features, mostly because they make them in intensively creative ways. Their first two features, Coraline and ParaNorman, were wonderful films, blending stop frame animation with CGI, and happened to be well written, well acted and heart touching to boot. So it is with great anticipation that this teaser for their next film, The Boxtrolls, looks to be par for the course.

Also, in the wake of the DOMA ruling in the US, the trailer seems timely and appropriate. Has there ever been an argument, let alone a movie trailer, that so concisely cuts through the political bullshit of the modern family, while also being very clever and a tiny bit sad? I doubt anyone else has ever tried.

The film stars Game of Thrones' Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Ben Kingsley, Elle Fanning, Jared Harris, Toni Collette, Richard Ayoade, and oddly, Tracy Morgan, and won't be on the big screen until September. Of 2014.

I say to Laika, take all the time you need.
