Merry Christmas, Prof. Song

The ninth series of Doctor Who starts in a few weeks, seeing Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman returning for their second year together. Filming wise though, they've been through for some time, and in fact pre-production has started on this year's Christmas Special. And joining the Dozenth Doctor on his annual yule adventure is his old flame, River Song, making an unexpected return. Unexpected because her arc had pretty much run it's course, so had thought the audience. And the man who created her. And the actress who played her. As Moffat himself said:
"Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who - and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song. The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time ..."
Added Alex Kingston:
"To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday's read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!"
I... don't have a problem with River. I know some people do. I don't think she's always been used to the greatest effect, but you can say that about literally every character on the show. I do think that the premise of the character is a complex one, and exactly the sort of thing that the show needs, and that it was afraid to broach until Moffat just did it. Also, considering that her relationship with the Doctor spans decades, out of order, it makes sense for her to encounter Capaldi at least once, if only to give validity to the notion that she had a relationship with the Doctor, not just one of his regenerations. I look forward to seeing how what she'll have to say about Capaldi's eyebrows this Christmas.
